Make or Miss: The Lesson We Can Learn from Steph Curry’s 500 Free Throws

Did you know Steph Curry shoots 500 free throws before every game? Let that sink in. With an NBA season spanning 82 games, that’s over 40,000 shots per year. When I first heard this statistic, I doubted it—how could someone as accomplished as Curry, one of the greatest basketball players of all time, still put in that much work? Surely, he doesn’t need it, right?

I was curious, so I asked my husband, a former college basketball player, “Do you actually think Steph Curry shoots 500 free throws before every game?” Without hesitation, he replied, “Yes, I know he does because we had to shoot 250.”

I was stunned. Here’s someone at the pinnacle of his career, still putting in the reps, day in and day out. That’s when my husband dropped the phrase that really hit me: “It’s a make or miss.”

At first, I thought it was all about making every shot—because isn’t that the goal? But it wasn’t. The focus wasn’t on perfection; it was about showing up, putting in the effort, and taking the shot—whether it went in or not.

The Power of Repetition

Curry’s relentless work ethic isn’t about hitting 100% of his shots. It’s about building consistency, refining his craft, and preparing himself for game time, no matter what. It’s the reps that matter. It’s the dedication to taking the shot, even if you miss, knowing that each attempt is making you better.

How often do we shy away from opportunities because we’re afraid of missing? How often do we let the fear of failure hold us back from even trying?

Making or Missing Isn’t the Point

In life, business, and personal growth, it’s not about succeeding every time—it’s about being willing to step up and take the shot. It’s about showing up for yourself, even when the odds aren’t in your favor.

So, the next time you feel discouraged or think you have to “make every shot,” remind yourself that it’s not about perfection. It’s about trying, learning, and getting better with every attempt.

Curry’s 500 free throws aren’t just about basketball. They’re a metaphor for life. Success doesn’t come from a single perfect moment but from the accumulation of countless tries—whether they’re makes or misses.

Take Your Shot

Don’t let fear of failure keep you from stepping onto the court of your life. Whether it’s applying for that job, starting a new business, or learning a new skill, remember: the outcome doesn’t define you. What matters is that you tried.

Show up. Take the shot. Make or miss—it’s all part of the game. And who knows? With enough reps, you might just become the Steph Curry of your own story.
